Tips for Shooting Video With Your Phone

patient testimonial video tipsI frequently harp on the importance of recording patient testimonial videos. These are not only important for credibility, but they also help expand your reach online. You can post these videos to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, and other social sites.

While shooting a patient testimonial is pretty straightforward, there are some small tips that – if implemented – can make a big difference on the quality of your video…

1) Sufficient lighting: Utilize a well-lit room with a background that is solid-colored and not too distracting.

2) Use a tripod with clip: A steady hand might work, but for $10 or so you might as well be safe and just get yourself a tri-pod with a clip. You can find a highly rated one on Amazon here.

3) Shoot in landscape mode: Videos look best when they’re shot in landscape mode because they display well on all 16:9 monitors, including your phone, computer, and TV.

4) Focus on the patient: Once you’ve got the patient in the frame, the lighting is good and you’re ready to shoot, you’ll want to make sure your camera auto-focuses. Then you’ll want to tap and hold your finger on the area of the screen where you want the camera to focus. I would aim for the patient’s face. You’ll know this is locked in when you see the “AE/EF Lock” notice on your screen.

5) Avoid interruptions: Obviously, limiting the background noise is crucial. However, one oft-overlooked way to prevent interruptions is to put your phone in ‘Airplane Mode’ so that you don’t get an incoming text or call while you’re shooting.

*Bonus tip: While the iPhone and Android cameras work well, consider using a dedicated video recording app, such as FiLMiC Pro or almost DSLR, to have more control over the video recording options. You can adjust frame rates and even edit the video recording quality.
